Alcohol / Alkohol

Alcohol provides energy or calories, without directly raising blood sugar. (It may lower it however) These extra calories can increase your weight slightly.

 

The body sends alcohol to the liver where it is metabolized first before other carbohydrates, so other consumed carbs are then stored as fat.  

In small amounts, alcohol is relatively harmless—one glass of dry wine or  light beer with dinner—but if you’re the type who can’t limit drinking, it’s best to avoid it entirely.

 

Mixed drinks and dessert wines and normal beer are loaded with carbohydrates, so they’re best avoided. Some exceptions would be a dry martini or mixed drinks that can be made with a sugar-free mixer, such as sugar-free tonic water.

 

As long as you aren’t looking to lose weight, a modest drink here or there shouldn’t make much of a difference. If you’re looking to lose weight, however, we’d suggest avoiding alcohol altogether.

 

If you’re an insulin-dependent diabetic, you need to be cautious about drinking. As it can lowers blood glucose (for up toe 12 hours). As intoxication and low blood glucose symptoms are similar you may confuse being tipsy with low blood glucose. Keep on testing your blood glucose level.

In kleiner hoeveelhede is alkohol relatief skadeloos – een glas droë wyn of ligte bier saam met aandete-maar as jy weet dat 1 glas nie genoeg gaan wees nie, is dit beter om dit te vermy.

 

Vermy gemengde drankies en dessert wyne en gewone bier wat gelaai is met koolhidrate. Uitsonderings is 'n droë martini of drankies wat met suikervrye vloeistof gemeng is.

 

Indien jy nie gewig wil verloor nie behoort 'n drankies af en toe nie '’n verskil te maak nie.  Indien jy egter wil gewig verloor is dit beter om dit te vermy.

 

Insulien-afhanklike diabete moet drank versigtig gebruik. Dit kan bloedsuiker tot 12 ure lank verlaag. Lae bloedsuiker simptome en beskonkenheid kan dieselfde simptome hê en mag jy jou aangeklamheid verwar met lae bloedsuiker. Toets dus gereeld jou bloedsuiker vlak.
